I have recently returned from the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys ("NAELA") annual conference. The conference was an eye opening experience for me. The various speakers and other attorneys I met all spoke about the increasing government attacks on middle class senior citizens.
Many of the recent government cuts have affected middle class senior citizens with a disproportionate impact with respect to other groups of citizens. The problem is that the senior citizens are an easy target for cuts and many politicians find it easy to justify cuts to government programs designed to help senior citizens. The cuts are coming with more frequency and more intensity as the various governments deal with budget problems.
As elder law attorneys it is our duty to fight these cuts at every possible juncture. Be it through the political process or through the courts, our vulnerable clients need help in these troubling times.
I have come back from the conference with a renewed sense of purpose in regard to my service to the elderly community. I will continue to fight back against unfair cuts to programs designed to help the elderly.
To that end, I will be filing a lawsuit in the Grand Traverse County Circuit Court to force the State of Michigan to comply with previous orders of the court awarding benefits to my needy clients. I will also continue to be aggressive with legal planning techniques that help our middle class clients obtain government benefits.
The national conference was a great experience. It was refreshing to be around so many attorneys who all care for the elderly. I am thankful to be an elder law attorney and thankful to have an opportunity to help.
